Carbohydrates and Diabetes! To eat or not to eat?

The intake of carbohydrate in the diet can augment Diabetes as it has sugar and starch as its component. Consuming it restriction would help the patient.

Carbohydrates are an essential part of a daily diet and their consumption in right quantities can be very beneficial to the body. However, for the people affected with diabetes, it is slightly different. The two main carbohydrate forms are sugars (fructose, lactose, glucose) and starches (starchy vegetables, potatoes, grains, cereals, rice).

The body breaks down the carbohydrates into glucose which is a sugar. However, for the individuals suffering from diabetes, extra care has to be taken in the form of maintenance of the dietary regime and exercise routine. It is not necessary to completely avoid this nutrient. It can be done in a restricted way as explained below.

Restricted Carbohydrate Diets

It basically means setting a limit or keeping a check on the amount consumed over the course of a meal during an entire day. The dietitians may prescribe a certain amount of intake which should not be exceeded. The diets with low carbohydrates are also a form of restricted carbohydrate diet.

How Does It Work?

These diets actually help in reducing hunger which automatically reduces the urge to eat and keeps the calorie quotient in check. Along with helping in weight loss, it is also important for maintaining blood glucose control. While following such a diet, the intake of fats and proteins may be increased steadily.
